Straight Flute Router Bits
Straight cutting edges for stable, chatter-free grooving and edge work.
Uncoated & multi-colour coated · 3.175 to 12 mm shanks

Quick answer: a straight flute router bit has cutting edges parallel to the tool axis instead of helical. With no helix angle there is no lifting or pushing force on the workpiece, so the tool is very stable in shallow cuts and is a common choice for grooving, dadoing and edge work where the part must not lift. It is also used on aluminium, PVC and similar materials where a spiral geometry would pull the workpiece.
Materials and machines
- Materials: MDF and HDF, particle board, plywood, natural hardwood, softwood, acrylic, PVC board, aluminium plate and aluminium profile
- Machines: Advertising CNC engraving machines, CNC nesting routers, CNC routers, desktop and compact CNC engraving machines
Feed rate, spindle speed and depth of cut must be matched to the tool diameter, material, machine rigidity and workholding. These are application-specific and are confirmed for each order.
Complete size list
Available uncoated or with a multi-colour coating. Both versions share the same size range.
Straight flute end mill
Cutting edges are parallel to the shank, which keeps the cutting force balanced and avoids lifting the workpiece.
| Shank (mm) | Cutting Ø (mm) | Cutting length (mm) | Overall length (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.175 | 1 – 3.175 | 3 – 22 | 38 – 45 |
| 4 | 4 | 12 – 32 | 45 – 55 |
| 6 | 6 | 22 – 52 | 50 – 80 |
| 8 | 8 | 25 – 100 | 60 – 150 |
| 10 | 10 | 32 – 100 | 70 – 150 |
| 12 | 12 | 35 – 100 | 70 – 150 |
Ranges indicate the combinations available within each shank family. Confirm exact lengths for your program when ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What is a straight flute router bit used for?
Grooving, dadoing, slotting and edge work where the workpiece must not be lifted, and on materials such as aluminium, PVC and acrylic where a spiral geometry would pull the part.
Straight flute vs spiral — which should I use?
A spiral geometry shears the material for a cleaner edge and clears chips better. A straight flute has no axial force, so it is more stable in shallow cuts and is preferred where lifting the part would be a problem. For edge finish in wood, a spiral is usually better.
Can a straight flute bit cut aluminium?
Yes, straight flute tools are offered for aluminium plate and aluminium profile as well as wood-based panels and plastics.
Should I choose the uncoated or the multi-colour coated version?
Uncoated gives the sharpest edge at the lowest cost and suits short runs and mixed work. The coated version is normally chosen for continuous production where the extra edge life is worth the additional cost.
Can I order custom sizes?
Yes. Cutting diameter, cutting length and overall length can be produced to your drawing, uncoated or coated.
