YINGBA professional-grade V-groove router bits, black coated and bright finish, in packaging

Quick answer: a V-groove router bit has a pointed tip ground to a defined included angle, so it cuts a V-shaped groove instead of a flat-bottomed slot. Because the groove widens as the tool goes deeper, the same bit produces fine hairline lettering at shallow depth and bold strokes at full depth. It is used for V-carved lettering, sharp internal corners, chamfers and decorative grooves in wood, MDF and plywood.

Designed for the job, specified for your machine

A V-groove bit is the only common router geometry that reaches a true point, which is why it owns two jobs nothing else does well: V-carved lettering and squaring an internal corner that a flat end mill has left rounded. It is also the standard tool for decorative grooves and chamfered edges.

The included angle sets the relationship between depth and stroke width, so the angle and the cutting depth are chosen together. For the surrounding theory see ball nose vs flat end mill vs V-bit and router bits for sign making.

Which included angle should I choose?

Included angleBest forNotes
60°Small lettering and fine detailHolds detail better at small sizes, roughly under 25 mm cap height
90°Larger, bolder letters and general V-carvingStronger strokes and lower tool pressure at larger sizes
120°Wide decorative cuts and shallow chamfersBroad, shallow groove with a flatter profile
Narrow angles (15–45°)Fine decorative lines and narrow deep groovesSharp tips are fragile and sensitive to runout

Depth controls stroke width. A V-groove widens as it goes deeper, so the same tool gives thin elegant lines at a shallow pass and bold ones at full depth. Let the toolpath set the depth rather than changing tools, and keep the depth consistent across the job so stroke weights match. Confirm the actual angle and tip condition of the tool before programming.

Feed rate, spindle speed and depth of cut must be matched to the tool angle, tip condition, material, machine rigidity and workholding. These are application-specific and are confirmed for each order.

Where a V-groove bit fits — and where it doesn’t

  • Use it for: V-carved lettering and signs, squaring internal corners left rounded by a flat end mill, chamfered and bevelled edges, and decorative grooves.
  • Don’t use it for: flat-bottomed pockets or grooves, and bulk material removal — a V-bit is a detail tool, so rough the bulk with a flat end mill first.
  • Watch the tip: the point is the weakest part of the tool. Excess plunge rate, uneven stock or spindle runout will break small tips.

Frequently asked questions

What is a V-groove router bit used for?

V-carved lettering and signs, chamfered and bevelled edges, decorative grooves, and squaring an internal corner that a flat end mill has left rounded. It is used in wood, MDF and plywood.

Which angle should I choose — 60°, 90° or 120°?

Use 60° for small lettering and fine detail (roughly under 25 mm cap height) where detail matters most. Use 90° for larger, bolder letters and general V-carving. Use 120° for wide decorative cuts and shallow chamfers where a broad, flatter groove is wanted.

Can a V-groove bit cut a flat-bottomed pocket?

No. A V-groove bit cuts a V-shaped groove and reaches a point, so it cannot produce a flat floor. Use a flat end mill for flat-bottomed pockets and grooves, and reserve the V-groove bit for lettering, chamfers and sharp internal corners.

How does cutting depth affect the groove?

The groove widens in proportion to the cutting depth and the included angle. A shallow pass gives a thin line; a deeper pass gives a wider, bolder stroke from the same tool. That is what makes V-carving possible, and it is also why the workpiece surface must be flat and the Z-zero set accurately — uneven stock changes the stroke width.

Can I order custom angles?

Yes. Included angles, tip type, shank diameter, cutting length and flute design can be produced to your drawing. Send your specification and we will review feasibility and sampling. See the OEM & ODM service.
